We looked at the domains in 1.47 million real addresses and found more than ten thousand misspellings of Gmail, iCloud and Hotmail alone. The interesting part was not how many there were. It was that the most common ones are registered.
A misspelling nobody owns has no mail server. You send, it bounces, your ESP records a hard bounce, and you remove the address — annoying, but self-correcting. A misspelling somebody does own accepts the message. There is no bounce and no complaint. The contact sits in your list looking perfectly healthy, never opening anything, quietly dragging down the engagement rate that mailbox providers use to judge you. You cannot find these from bounce reports, because they never generate one. The only way to catch them is to look at the domain and notice it is one letter away from a real provider.

A domain within one or two character edits of a major provider — gmial.com and gmil.com for gmail.com, hotmial.com for hotmail.com, yaho.com for yahoo.com. These are almost always a real person mistyping their own address at a signup form, which means a real customer you cannot reach.
Because it decides whether you ever find out. A typo whose domain has no mail server bounces, and the bounce tells you the address was wrong. A typo whose domain does have a mail server accepts your message and delivers it to nobody. You get no bounce, no complaint, and no signal at all — the contact simply never engages, and you keep mailing them for years.
